Bitmail

Everything Bitmail does

A plain list of the app's functionality, grouped the way you would run into it. Nothing here is planned or coming later — this is what the app does.

01The core idea

  • An email client that presents a mailbox the way a messaging app does
  • One conversation per person instead of per thread
  • Inbox and Sent are merged, so both halves of an exchange sit in one chat
  • Quoted history and signatures are stripped out and folded behind a tap

02Accounts and sign-in

  • Automatic server discovery — type an email address and password, nothing else
  • Works with any IMAP/SMTP provider
  • Recognises Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail and other common providers
  • Sign in with Microsoft, for personal Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 work accounts
  • Sign in with Google
  • Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace company domains are detected automatically
  • Warns up front when a provider needs an app password
  • Manual server setup, for anything discovery cannot find
  • Multiple accounts
  • A unified inbox across all accounts, or one account at a time
  • Passwords stored in the Android keystore, never in plain settings

03Reading mail

  • Chat bubbles with day separators and message grouping
  • Swipe to reply
  • Swipe to archive or delete
  • Five painted chat backgrounds, plus plain
  • Five chat list layouts to choose from
  • Light and dark themes, plus follow-the-system
  • Search across everything synced
  • Filters for unread, starred and messages with attachments
  • Read the sender's original HTML in a real browser engine when needed
  • Remote images blocked until you ask for them
  • Offline first — the chat list loads from the device before any network call

04Smart content

  • Parcel tracking numbers, with a link to the right carrier
  • Verification and one-time codes, tap to copy
  • Order, invoice and booking references
  • Receipt and invoice totals
  • Add-to-calendar for invitations
  • The one action link an email was sent to make you click
  • One-tap unsubscribe, read from the sender's own List-Unsubscribe header
  • Nothing is shown for ordinary personal email

05Spam and security

  • A spam filter that moves junk to the Spam folder and never deletes anything
  • Reads the spam verdict the mail server already computed
  • Checks SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and marks forged senders
  • Never files away anyone you have written to
  • Block a sender, or a whole domain
  • A blocked senders list, with one-tap unblock
  • Tells you every time it moves something, with a link to go and read it
  • One tap to put anything back in the inbox
  • Nothing is ever hidden without saying so

06Document viewer, built in

  • PDF
  • Word (.docx and .doc)
  • Excel (.xlsx and .xls)
  • PowerPoint (.pptx and .ppt)
  • OpenDocument text, spreadsheet and presentation
  • Images
  • CSV, with automatic delimiter detection
  • Plain text
  • Calendar invites, shown as when, where and who
  • Contact cards
  • Find-in-file
  • Spreadsheets get a real grid with a sticky header row and proper date and percentage formatting
  • Save any attachment to the device
  • Open in another app when you would rather

07Writing and sending

  • Reply, reply all and forward
  • Recipient autocomplete from everyone you have corresponded with
  • Cc and Bcc
  • Attachments
  • Drafts
  • A custom signature
  • A built-in file picker with photo, video and audio tabs, search and folder filters
  • A running total against your provider's send limit while you pick files

08Large files

  • Knows each provider's per-message attachment limit
  • Warns before you hit it, not after the upload fails
  • Send as a link instead — files up to 2 GB
  • An optional password on a transfer link
  • Upload straight from the phone

09Organising

  • Archive
  • Delete
  • Star
  • Mark read and unread
  • Mark all as read
  • Pin a conversation to the top
  • Mute a conversation
  • Snooze a conversation until later
  • Undo on every action
  • Browse any folder on the server
  • Move a message to any folder
  • Empty Trash or Spam

10Notifications and live updates

  • New mail arrives with the app closed
  • Works without any Bitmail server — the phone watches the mailbox itself
  • No mail password ever leaves the device
  • Tap a notification to open that conversation
  • Per-conversation mute
  • Notifications can be switched off entirely

11Privacy

  • No ads
  • No tracking or analytics
  • No Bitmail account to create
  • Mail passwords stay in the device keystore
  • Mail goes directly between the phone and your own mail provider
  • No storage permission requested at all — the app only ever sees the file you hand it
