Frequently asked questions
Everything people ask before installing an email app they have not used before.
01Getting started
Is Bitmail free?
Yes. Bitmail is free to download and use. There are no ads, no subscription, no paid tier and no data sold to advertisers.
Where can I download Bitmail?
On Google Play, at play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kurdbits.bitmailclient. It is free, and the download page on this site links straight to it.
Which Android version do I need?
Android 7.0 (API level 24) or newer. There is no iOS version at the moment.
Do I need to create a Bitmail account?
No. There is no Bitmail account, no sign-up and no profile. You add the email account you already have, and that is the whole setup.
02Email accounts
Which email providers work with Bitmail?
Any provider that offers IMAP and SMTP. Gmail, Outlook.com, iCloud, Yahoo, Fastmail, Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace are recognised automatically, and anything else can be set up by typing the server details yourself.
Do I have to know my IMAP server settings?
Usually not. Bitmail discovers the servers from your email address. Manual setup is available for providers that discovery cannot find.
Can I use more than one account?
Yes. Add as many as you like and read them in one unified inbox, or switch to a single account at a time.
What is an app password, and will I need one?
Some providers require a separate password for third-party mail apps instead of your normal one. Bitmail warns you up front when the provider you entered needs one, so you find out before sign-in fails.
Can I sign in with Google or Microsoft?
Yes. Bitmail supports Sign in with Google and Sign in with Microsoft, including personal Outlook.com addresses and Microsoft 365 work accounts.
03Privacy and security
Does Bitmail read my email?
No. Your mail is fetched by your phone directly from your provider and processed on the device. There is no Bitmail server in between, so there is no copy of your mail for anyone here to read.
Where is my email password stored?
In the Android keystore on your device. It is never written to plain settings files and it never leaves the phone.
Does Bitmail track me or use analytics?
No. There is no tracking, no analytics SDK, no telemetry and no advertising identifier. Nothing about how you use the app is collected or transmitted.
How does Bitmail get notifications without a server?
The phone watches the mailbox itself using the mail protocol. That means new mail arrives with the app closed, and your mail password still never leaves the device.
What permissions does the app ask for?
No storage permission is requested at all. The app only ever sees a file at the moment you hand it one through the system picker.
How does Bitmail handle spam?
Junk is moved to the Spam folder and never deleted. Bitmail reads the verdict your mail server already computed, checks SPF, DKIM and DMARC to catch forged senders, and never files away anyone you have written to. Every move is announced and can be undone with one tap.
04Using the app
What makes Bitmail different from other email apps?
It is organised by person rather than by thread. Inbox and Sent are merged into one conversation per contact, and quoted history, disclaimers and signatures are folded away so you read only what was actually written.
Can I open attachments without another app?
Yes. PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument files, images, CSV, plain text, calendar invites and contact cards all open inside Bitmail, with find-in-file and a proper spreadsheet grid.
Can I send large files with Bitmail?
Yes — up to 2 GB, free, without leaving the app. Most email providers cap attachments at around 20–25 MB. Bitmail knows your provider's limit, warns you before an upload fails, and offers to send the file as a download link instead, optionally protected by a password. You do not need WeTransfer, WeSendIt, Dropbox or any other third-party service.
Can I change how Bitmail looks?
Yes. There are five painted chat backgrounds plus a plain one, five layouts for the chat list, and light, dark and follow-the-system themes. You can also read all accounts in one unified inbox or switch to a single account at a time, and mute, snooze or disable notifications per conversation.
Does Bitmail work offline?
The chat list loads from the device before any network call, so the app opens instantly and your synced mail is readable without a connection.
Which languages does Bitmail support?
18: English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Hungarian, Greek, Romanian, Russian and Ukrainian. The app follows your phone's language setting and falls back to English.
